To use this chart, first figure out the common ancestor, like a grandparent. Then, find that grandparent's related ancestor of your choice, such as their grandchild (GC). According to the chart, you would locate that grandchild (GC) in the top row of the chart. To determine that child's relationship to the grandparent's other grandchild, now locate the other grandchild in the left hand column. Follow the grandchild in the top row down and the grandchild in the left hand column across until the two grandchildren meet. The box in which they meet reflects their relationship to each other. In this case, the two grandchildren are 1st cousins.
