Childbirth Basics
The cervix doesn't begin to dilate until the start of labor.
The first stage of labor is usually the longest, lasting 6 to 18 hours for first pregnancies and 3 to 10 hours for subsequent births. It begins when your cervix starts to open and ends when it's fully dilated.
The second stage - which can last two hours or longer - commences when your cervix is fully dilated and continues until your baby is born. The last stage takes about 15 to 20 minutes and ends when the placenta is expelled.
Early Phase
Stage 1: Dilatation
State 2: Pushing and Birth
